Stuart Low, 'Dusting'

This painting ‘Dusting’ is from a series of several made in my studio after circular walks during the autumn and winter months in the Glyderau in North Wales.

For a long time, Stuart has been a maker of stained glass and still maintains a connection to this medium through teaching at the Bristol Folk House and part time employment in a glass conservation studio.  

However, an interest in painting has run alongside this career, culminating in a conscious decision some six years ago to adjust his practice and make painting the primary focus in his studio, at BV Studios in Bristol. Over this time, he has gradually developed a way of responding with materials to moments of escape found in walking, particularly in the high and mountainous areas of the countryside. It is here that he finds a fascination with sublime white summits in winter and mist descending on monochrome boulder fields in autumn, which bring a focus to ones awareness of terrain, of navigation though space and of the effects of cloud, weather and light on place.
